Wat is een parfum allergie? Kan iedereen het krijgen? En op wat moet ik letten? Vandaag bespreekt Lien voor jullie alle mogelijke vragen rond parfum allergie.

Vandaag een stukje over mensen die gevoelig zijn voor stoffen die in parfums/parfum olie voorkomen. Zij hebben een zogenaamde Parfum allergie. We gaan het dus hebben over Parfum allergenen, de stoffen waar een mens allergisch op kan reageren bij aanraking met de huid, en/of luchtwegen.

Een parfum allergie kan bij iedereen optreden. Ook als je al 30 bent en nog nooit ergens last van hebt gehad in de jaren ervoor.

Het werkt zo: Jaren lang wordt je blootgesteld aan die stoffen, en er gebeurt eigenlijk niets. Maar in je lichaam is een soort van optelsom aan de gang. Elke keer dat je in contact komt met zo’n stof wordt dat door je lichaam bij die som opgeteld, totdat een keer een limiet is bereikt, en je een allergische reactie gaat vertonen. Dat geldt niet voor iedereen. Er zijn mensen die hun hele leven die limiet niet halen omdat hun lichaam er anders mee omgaat of er simpelweg niet gevoelig voor is.

Als je zo’n allergie ontwikkelt kun je last krijgen van licht geirriteerde huid, huiduitslag en meer van dat soort vervelende klachten. Het kan zelfs echt erg worden en dan veroorzaakt het echt blijvende schade aan je huid.

Hieronder vindt je een lijst met de 26 stoffen die in de Europese cosmetica wet staan genoemd als zijnde Parfum allergenen:

Amyl cinnamal, Benzyl alcohol, Cinnamyl alcohol, Citral, Eugenol, Hydroxy-citronellal, Isoeugenol, Amylcin-namyl alcohol, Benzyl salicylate, Cinnamal, Coumarin, Geraniol, Hydroxy-methylpentylcyclohexenecarboxaldehyd, Anisyl alcohol, Benzyl cinnamate, Farnesol, 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl) propionald-hyd, Linalool, Benzyl benzoate, Citronellol, Hexyl cinnam-aldehyd, d-Limonene, Methyl heptin carbonate, 3-Methyl-4-(2,6,6-tri-methyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl)-3-buten-2-one, Oak moss and treemoss extract, Treemoss extract

Al deze stoffen zijn in meer of minder mate als Parfum allergeen aangemerkt. En om het voor de consument makkelijk te maken om na te gaan of er voor hen ingredienten in een product zitten die niet ok zijn moeten fabrikanten, en dat is wettelijk verplicht, sinds een aantal jaren vermelden op labels van hun cosmetica producten welke van deze stoffen in het product zitten. Dat geldt voor makeup, maar ook voor verzorgingsmiddelen.

Dat gebeurt ook netjes. Het staat er altijd op. Helaas staat het vaak met zulke kleine letters dat het nauwelijk te lezen is. Het is dus goed opletten geblazen.

En wat nog vervelender is is dat veel producenten in hun reclame uitingen deze stoffen vermelden met een *. Dan staat er een uitleg bij het *, vaak iets als * Komen van nature voor in essentiele olieen. Daarmee wordt een consument eigenlijk op het verkeerde been gezet om te geloven dat het natuurlijke stoffen zijn en dus niet gevaarlijk kunnen zijn. Dat is dus niet waar!

Even om iedereen uit de droom te helpen. Ook in stoffen die in de natuur voorkomen, welke stoffen dan ook, kunnen dingen zitten waar je als mens allergisch voor kan zijn, of kan worden. Een goed voorbeeld is de Aardbei. Veel mensen zijn daar allergisch voor.

Een voorbeeld van een willekeurig label, de potentiele allergenen staan in het vet vermeld zijn:

Als je van de een op de andere dag een allergische reactie krijgt door een makeup artikel, of een verzorgingsartikel, ga er dan mee naar je huisarts. Hij, of een dermatoloog, kan nagaan waar je allergisch voor bent, zij kunnen ook nagaan of dat voor een bepaalde stof is die voorkomt in parfumingredienten.
Niet dat daarmee je probleem is opgelost, maar je kunt nadien wel nagaan welke producten je dus in ’t vervolg niet meer moet gebruiken om een reactie te voorkomen.

Tegenwoordig zijn er al veel producten die vrij zijn van die 26 stoffen die in de lijst voorkomen. En steeds meer producenten gaan over op gebruik van parfum olien die deze stoffen niet bevatten. Let dus goed op de labels van producten als je weet dat je een parfum allergie hebt. Laat je testen als je vermoed dat je zo’n allergie hebt, om te weten te komen voor welke stoffen je precies allergisch bent. Bij een allergische reactie alleen maar een zalfje smeren tot het over is zal helaas niet voldoende zijn. En op die manier kan je bij een ander product opnieuw een vervelende reactie krijgen.

Coco betaine is geen parfum allergeen maar een tenside, dat zit in douchegels en badschuim. Dat is echt iets heel anders dan een allergie voor parfum.
Lush heeft in zijn producten ook parfums, daar zou je dus ook op moeten reageren.
